No German laws made cannibalism a crime, so the charges against Meiwes were murder for purposes of sexual pleasure and disturbing the peace of the dead. By the time of his arrest, he had already consumed 45 pounds of Brandes' flesh, much of which he fried in garlic. Not long after cops started sniffing around, taking some of the bags from his freezer, Meiwes confessed.
